Congratulations to Rikki and India for following up the submission of their MSc theses by winning three awards for their presentations at the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society annual conference in Napier, 2018.

India won the Department of Conservation Award for the best talk on marine conservation. Her research was on using species inventories to guide the selection of optimal locations for marine reserves in New Zealand.

Rikki won the best student presentation award for her talk on developing fish based indicators for ecosystem based management. Plus she won the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) award for best quantitative talk.

To cap their success further, the University of Auckland students won the trophy for best average quality of presentations by any institution.

Dr Roger Grace, a University of Auckland alumnus, and who teaches on our Marine Protected Areas course every year, won the prestigious John Morton Medal for his contribution to Marine Conservation in New Zealand. Roger was amongst the first scuba divers at Leigh Marine Laboratory and has been a leading marine ecologist and conservation champion for decades.
